Selecting a Real Estate Company or Agent
We asked
some local Realtors for suggestions, put in our own two cents, and came
up with the following tips to help you.
Start looking early. You can begin the process
by checking with firms in your current area for recommendations, or contact
local agents profiled in our real estate listings. Always ask for
and check references.
Consider the size of the company (is bigger
always better?), staff training, market penetration, price range of listings,
and what specialized services they offer. Some companies offer relocation
counseling and newcomer packages.
Interview potential agents (they do work
for you). Are they experienced? What are the company's sold-to-expiration
ratios? How many of their listings are in your price range?
Where are the majority of their listings? Whether the interview was
by telephone, fax, or E-mail, did you get the impression that they were
attuned to your needs, or did answers seem dashed off and out of whack?
(Q: Can you find me a 2-bedroom house with a 3-car garage? A: Sure,
all my houses have carports.)
If you are being transferred into our area,
check with your company. It may have contracted service with a particular
agency.
